Red tide alert up in Masbate

MANILA, Philippines - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has imposed a shellfish ban in Masbate.

In Shellfish Bulletin 20, BFAR said shellfish gathered from the waters of Mandaon in Masbate were found positive for the algae that produces the red tide toxin.

Irong-Irong Bay in Western Samar also remains positive for paralytic shellfish poison that is beyond the regulatory limit.

All types of shellfish gathered in the area are not safe for human consumption.

BFAR said fish, squid, shrimp and crab are safe to eat provided they are fresh and washed thoroughly and internal organs are removed before cooking.

The rest of the coastal waters in the country continue to be free from red tide toxins based on the results of the latest laboratory analysis of BFAR and local government units.
