PBA teams shun Slam King?

Nelson Beltran - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Slam dunk king Rey Guevarra is in limbo, without a contract and without a team barely three days before the opening of PBA Season 42 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Sunday.

Guevarra, the high-leaping former Letran Knight and former Gilas reserve, had yet to see an offer sheet when he left the country Wednesday to play in a FIBA 3-on-3 event in Dubai.

Apparently, coach Franz Pumaren hasn’t decided on whether he can use Guevarra at Globalport, the team that now holds the signing rights on the player by virtue of their trade deal with Meralco that also involved Joseph Yeo.

Meanwhile, former UP Maroon Raul Soyud has earned his spurs after working hard as reserve player at NLEX in the last two years.

New NLEX coach Yeng Guiao gave his nod on the burly 6-foot-6 front court player who is to be given a P3.24-million package for the next two PBA seasons.

Obviously, Guiao saw Soyud’s potential.

“He’s shooting three-pointers in practice. He may be developed by coach Yeng to be like Beau Belga and JR Quiñahan,” said Danny Espiritu, the agent/manager of Soyud.

The 31st pick in the 2014 Rookie Draft, Soyud failed to crack the NLEX roster in the last two seasons, seeing action for only two games in 2014-15 and four games last campaign.

But that didn’t stop Soyud from trying. The break he’s waiting for came on Guiao’s transfer to NLEX from Rain or Shine.

He’s guaranteed of P120,000 a month this coming season and P150,000 in the 2017-18 wars.

Over at the Star Hotshots camp, coach Chito Victolero enlisted insurance players in Alvin Abundo and Samboy de Leon both from Centro Escolar U and the Café France team in the PBA D-League.
