Pinay golfers make do minus US-based aces

- Joey Villar, Nelson Beltran -

NAKHON RACHASIMA – A hastily assembled, ragtag Philippine team will compete in SEA Games women’s golf with veteran internationalists Jayvie Agojo and Dottie Ardina unable to get clearance from their respective US schools to play here.

Tapped to take their spots are  Regina de Guzman and Chihiro Ikeda who will team up with lone holdover Anya Tanpinco.

Agojo produced two silvers for RP golf at The Country Club in 2005, placing second in the ladies’ individual play and powering the team to the same finish in team competition.

The men’s team will also be handicapped in the absence of ace player Jan Bayron who opted to try his luck in the Asian Tour qualifying, which runs in conflict with the SEAG schedule.

Mark Fernando, Jonel Ababa, reigning national champion Anthony Fernando and Ferdinand Aunzo now compose the men’s team seeking to defend the two gold medals won by Juvic Pagunsan and company in 2005.

The 72-hole men’s tourney fires off Monday and the 54-hole ladies event starts Tuesday at the Bonanza Golf and Country Club course in Kaoyai, a two-hour drive from here.

Pagunsan turned pro shortly after his two-gold exploits in 2005.

Agojo and Ardina could have formed a potent team with Tanpinco, capable of a good crack at the championship.

But Agojo, the 2004 RP Am champ, could not get a reprieve from her studies at Pepperdine and Ardina from the Leadbetter Pendleton Academy in Florida.
