Navarro, Tempo sports editor, 63

-
Rudy C. Navarro, Tempo sports editor, yesterday died of cardiac arrest. He was 63.

A veteran newsman, Navarro started his career as assistant business editor of the defunct Evening News in 1960.

During Martial Law in 1972, Navarro worked as business editor of the defunct Daily Express before transferring to Evening Post two years later.

Before he joined Tempo first as a deskman and later on as sports editor in 1982, Navarro was editor of Sports News.

Although he has covered other beats like business and police, Navarro made his mark as a hard-hitting sports columnist.

He was elected twice as president of the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) and became a director of the National Press Club (NPC).

A native of Mabini, Pangasinan, Navarro attended the Mabini Elementary School and St. Columban’s Academy. He earned a journalism degree at the University of Santo Tomas.

His body lies in state at the Holy Trinity Memorial chapel in Sucat, Parañaque. Interment will be announced later.
