Kung may Filipino ath-lete mang umagaw ng eksena sa 3rd ASEAN Para Games, ito ay wa-lang iba kundi si national chess player Sander Severino.

Nagsulong ang 20-anyos na si Severino ng kabuuang limang gintong medalya mula sa nila-hukan niyang combined individual, blindfold indi-vidual, blindfold team, handicapped individual at combined team sa class T53 (paralegics) ng chess competition.

Ang nasabing 5 gold medals ng tubong Silay, Negros Occidental ang siyang nag-akyat sa gold medal standing ng Team Philippines sa 22 bukod pa sa nasikwat na 41 silver at 37 bronze para pumuwesto sa No. 6.

 Sinabi ni Mike Barre-do, chairman ng Philip-pine ASEAN Para Games Organizing Committee (PAPGOC), na may po-tensyal ang mga Pinoy para mapabuti ang ranggo sa 4th ASEAN Para Games sa Thailand sa 2007. 

"The performance of our athletes only proves that we have the potential and given sufficient support, proper exposure and training, our diffe-rently-abled athletes can excel and bring honor for flag and country in the international sporting arena," sabi ni Barredo.

Matagumpay namang naidepensa ng Thailand ang kanilang overall crown nang humatak ng 139 gold, 64 silver at 28 bronze medal kasunod ang Vietnam (80-36-22), Malaysia (75-40-26), Indo-nesia (30-26-20) at Myan-mar (29-12-4).

 Ang naturang 22-41-37 ginto, pilak at tansong medalya ng Team Philip-pines ay mas malaki sa nahugot na 3-6-12 noong 2001 sa Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at 2-15-23 naman noong 2003 sa Hanoi, Vietnam.

 Ang Malaysia ang naghari noong 2001 sa nabitbit na 145-135-97, samantalang ang Thai-land ang nagdomina noong 2003 sa natubog na 100-62-31. (Russell Cadayona)
