P34 million smuggled onions, mackerel seized

MANILA, Philippines — Smuggled onions and frozen mackerels from China valued at P34 million have been seized at the Port of Manila.

Customs and agriculture personnel found six shipping containers carrying onions and frozen mackerel misdeclared as steamed buns, egg noodles and kimchi.

Authorities issued a warrant of seizure 

for the contraband on June 23 after inspecting the shipments on June 10.

Based on the Department of Agriculture’s price monitoring, the estimated fair market values were P10.2 million for red onions, P3.8 million for white onions and P20.08 million for frozen mackerel.
