MANILA, Philippines — Seven persons died of COVID in Davao City from Nov. 20 to 26, the city’s pandemic task force reported yesterday.

Four of the fatalities were unvaccinated while three have been vaccinated, but did not receive any booster shot.

Up to 155 new cases were recorded during the same period.

“Of all the COVID variants, the Omicron subvariants are more transmissible and can infect more people that is why we are putting weight on the vaccination,” Davao City COVID task force spokesperson Dr. Michelle Schlosser said.

She stressed the need for residents to get their primary doses of COVID vaccine and booster shots to protect themselves from catching the disease.

Schlosser noted that while Omicron is in itself an infectious variant of COVID, its subvariants are even more contagious.

“That is why it is emphasized that vaccine and booster doses are needed because the virus continues to mutate and every time it mutates, it is contagious,” she said.

“Vaccination does not promise that we will not be infected, but we’ll be able to have a good chance of not dying from COVID because we will be protected from the severe and critical type of the disease,” Schlosser added.

She urged the public to take the necessary precautions when attending social activities or going to crowded places, considering that physical distancing has been lifted and wearing of face mask is now voluntary, except in medical and health facilities.
