Army officer survives ambush; aide killed

COTABATO CITY, Philippines — An Army officer survived an ambush that killed his driver in this city on Saturday night.

Lt. Col. Manago Macalintangui, 49, and his civilian driver Ramil Laguioman, 34, were in a Mitsubishi Montero when motorcycle-riding assailants ambushed them at around 7 p.m. along Sinsuat Avenue.

Laguioman died instantly from gunshot wounds, according to Brig. Gen. John Guyguyon, chief of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region police.

Probers have yet to identify the assailants.

Macalintangui is detailed at the extension office in this city of Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez Jr.

Macalintangui’s friends expressed belief that he was the target of the attack.
