2 Central Mindanao towns inundated
COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Two towns in Central Mindanao have been placed under a state of calamity due to floods spawned by heavy downpour.
The adjoining towns of Datu Montawal and Pikit, located in Maguindanao and North Cotabato, respectively, are close to the Liguasan Delta, which serves as a catch basin for more than a dozen rivers that flow from the hinterlands.
Flashfloods swept through dozens of barangays in both towns after the delta overflowed last week following heavy downpour and thunderstorms.
Balumol Cadiding of the Datu Montawal municipal disaster risk reduction and management office said the local government is attending to the needs of the evacuees.
Pikit Mayor Sumulong Sultan said rice and corn crops worth at least P60 million were destroyed in the flood.
The municipal council of Pikit declared a state of calamity last weekend to enable the mayor to release funds for calamity assistance.
The Datu Montawal municipal council also declared a state of calamity following recommendations from barangay officials and local disaster response councils.
