CHR: Probe other nanlaban cases

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The government should investigate other alleged cases of extrajudicial killings, according to the Commission on Human Rights.

CHR spokesperson Jacqueline de Guia said the fabricated drug bust in San Jose del Monte City in Bulacan cast doubts on the nature of deaths in the government’s war on illegal drugs.

The Philippine National Police relieved 11 police officers accused of detaining six men and killing two of them in what law enforcers claimed was a drug sting.

The National Bureau of Investigation filed complaints for kidnapping with murder, planting of firearms and planting of illegal drugs against the police officers.

De Guia cited a recent report of the United Nations High Commissioner on Human Rights on ”widespread and systematic killing” of drug suspects in the country.

“Time and again, the rhetoric of nanlaban or those who fought back has been abused by the police force to explain numerous deaths linked to the government’s campaign against illegal drugs,” she said.
