MANILA, Philippines — A public school in Taguig City pushed through with graduation rites yesterday amid the coronavirus lockdown, with students attending the ceremony through robots.

Four robots, adorned with corsages pinned to white togas, were equipped with tablets that displayed live videos of the faces of the Senator Renato “Compañero” Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School’s 179 graduates.

The four robots were made with recycled materials by the school’s students, who had joined robotics competitions abroad.

Only officials of the school, the city government and the Department of Education were physically present at the ceremony held at the school’s auditorium.

Mayor Lino Cayetano said they recognize the importance of organizing graduation rites and and letting the graduates’ families enjoy the ceremony.
