20 PUV franchises cancelled ahead of strike

Romina Cabrera - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Ahead of the scheduled transport strike on Monday, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) yesterday announced that it has cancelled the franchises of 20 public utility vehicle operators over a strike in 2017.

Chairman Martin Delgra said LTFRB Memorandum Circular 2011-004 prohibits PUV operators and drivers from joining protest actions that would put commuters at an inconvenience.

“They violated their franchises then, they should face the consequences now. We will not hesitate to enforce this order because those who took part in the strike did not think of the passengers’ welfare,” Delgra said in Filipino.

Transport Secretary Arthur Tugade has warned operators against joining the transport strike slated on Monday, organized by major jeepney and UV Express groups, to protest the proposed phaseout of jeepneys and UV Express service vehicles by July next year.

The Office of transportation Cooperatives has directed all cooperatives not to join the protests or face the automatic revocation of their accreditation. – Richmond Mercurio
