DOH issues tips vs summer ailments

MANILA, Philippines — With summer approaching, the Department of Health (DOH) yesterday advised the public to observe measures to avoid ailments associated with rising temperatures.
According to DOH Secretary Francisco Duque III, the “biggest enemy” during summer is dehydration, especially among the young and the old.
When people get older, their brains sometimes cannot process the sensation of thirst even if their body is demanding water, he said.
“It is important for the children or the relatives of the elderly to regularly give them drinking water, to encourage them to drink water. The same goes for infants, we should always rehydrate them,” he said in a radio interview.
Duque added that the public should avoid outdoor activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are hottest, to prevent heat stroke or heat exhaustion, which could be fatal if not immediately addressed.
Heat stroke is the “most severe form of heat illness when the body overheats and cannot cool down,” according to the DOH.
Aside from heat stroke, the other diseases associated with summer include boils or pigsa, abscess, chickenpox, sore eyes, measles, diarrhea and cholera.
