Quake jolts Davao

Ghio Ong, Helen Flores - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A magnitude five earthquake shook Davao Occidental yesterday but no damage was expected, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs director Renato Solidum said the tremor occurred at 1:24 p.m. Its epicenter was located 141 kilometers southeast of Sarangani.

Solidum allayed fears of a tsunami as a result of the quake. He said earthquakes of magnitudes five to six on the Richter scale are unlikely to generate tsunamis.

“Some of them cause small local damage near the epicenter,” he said.
