Suspects in slay try on lawyer, barangay chairman fall
CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna , Philippines – Police have arrested the two principal suspects in attempts to kill a lawyer of the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) in 2012 and a barangay chairman in Batangas in 1999, officials said yesterday.
Joseph Dimaano, 32, and Luis Huelga, 75, alias “Ka Luis†were arrested in separate police operations in Taysan and Sto. Tomas towns, both in Batangas, last Friday.
Reports said the arrests of Dimaano and Huelga were based on a warrant issued by Judges Aida Santos of Batangas City and Flordelis Ozaeta Navarro of Tanauan City, respectively.
Dimaano was tagged as one of two gunmen who shot lawyer Arsenio Hernandez in Batangas City in October 2012.
Huelga was identified by witnesses as one of the men who shot Conrado Pecaño, chairman of Barangay Santa Maria in Sto. Tomas, in January 1999.
The judges set bail at P200,000 for each of the suspects.
