Marcos relieves Torre as PNP chief

Ian Laqui - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines — Just three months into his term, Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III has been relieved from office.

In a message to reporters on Tuesday, August 26, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin confirmed Torre’s relief as PNP chief.

“You are hereby relieved as Chief, PNP effective immediately. For the continuous and efficient delivery of public services in the PNP, you are hereby directed to ensure proper turnover of all matters, documents and information relative to your office,” a Palace document dated August 25 read.

However, the document did not state the reason for Torre’s relief from the position.

Meanwhile, Lt. Gen. Jose Nartatez Jr., the former PNP deputy chief for administration, replaced Torre as the PNP chief.

Torre formally assumed leadership of the PNP on June 2, succeeding former chief Rommel Marbil.

Before his appointment, Torre led high-profile operations, including the arrest of detained preacher Apollo Quiboloy between August and September 2024 and the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently held at the International Criminal Court facility in the Netherlands. — with reports from the STAR/ Helen Flores
