MANILA, Philippines — The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) on Friday, August 15, is currently vetting its running list of Ombudsman candidates.

The position of Ombudsman is a powerful one: they are tasked with probing and prosecuting cases of corruption and wrongdoing within the government. So, who’s on the JBC’s list?

The list includes Justice Secretary Boying Remulla, who has earlier voiced his intent to throw his name in the ring.

Remulla was initially rumored to be disqualified from the Ombudsman race, but the updated list confirmed that he is still part of the pool of candidates.

However, the Justice Secretary faces stiff competition, as he is up against sitting and former Supreme Court justices, as well as former and current key government officials.

One of them is Kim Jacinto-Henares, the famed former Commissioner of the Bureau of Internal Revenue during the late president Benigno Aquino III’s term.

Here is the full list of Ombudsman applicants:

  2. Romeo Benitez: Department of Interior and Local Government Undersecretary for External, Legal and Legislative Affairs
  3. Jonie Caroche-Vestido: Private practice lawyer
