Palace: More than 300 stranded in NCR ferried back to provinces
MANILA, Philippines — More than 300 people stranded in Metro Manila — the government calls them locally stranded individuals, or LSI — have been provided with transportation to their respective provinces, Malacañang said Monday.
Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said 764 LSIs were transferred to two venues in Pasay as of June 14.
Most of the stranded persons, 649 of them, were brought to the Villamor Air Base Elementary School while 115 were transferred to the Philippine State College of Aeronautics.
Roque said 379 of the stranded persons have been given transportation.
They were transported through Coast Guard ship BRP Gabriela Silang bound for General Santos and Davao City and a Cebu Pacific flight bound for Davao City. The social welfare department has provided 633 sanitary kits and 633 sleeping kits to the stranded persons.
It has also distributed P2,000 each to each strandee.
The government vowed to help stranded persons following the death of house helper Michelle Silvertino, who died while waiting for a bus ride to Bicol.
Citing labor department data, Roque said a total of 50,105 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have also been sent home to their provinces as of Monday. The labor department has also distributed P1.44 billion to about 139,000 OFWs through its Abot Kamay ang Pagtulong program.
