7 Boracay dragon boat team members die as boat capsizes — PCG
MANILA, Philippines (Update 2, 12:12 p.m.) — The Philippine Coast Guard on Wednesday said at least seven members of the Boracay Dragon Boat team died after its boat capsized off Sitio Lingganay, Barangay Manoc-manoc, Boracay Island.
The PCG immediately conducted search and rescue operations and managed to save 14 of the 21 members. Seven casualties were recovered from the incident, which occured at 7:40 a.m.
"Identification of the victims will be withheld for the next 24 hours until the next of kin have been notified," PCG said.
Based on investigation, the dragon boat team members was practicing "when sudden strong waves hit them which caused them to capsize."
The survivors were brought to Saint Gabriel Hospital for medical attention.
Meanwhile, Philippine Red Cross chair Sen. Richard Gordon said his team already responded to the incident.
“Our team provided psychosocial therapy and on standby for search and rescue operations,” Gordon said.
