As 'Samuel' inches away from PAR, PAGASA monitors new tropical cyclone

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Samuel moves over the West Philippine Sea and is forecast to exit the Philippine jurisdiction between tonight and Friday early morning. 

"Samuel" is moving west at 25 kph. Its eye was located at 90 km north-northwest of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. 

It has maintained its strength packing maximum winds of up to 45 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 65 kph.

Signal No. 1 has been lifted over Cuyo Island but remains over Palawan including Calamian Group of Islands where moderate to heavy rains, which may trigger floods and landslides, are still expected.

"Samuel" had made landfall over Roxas, Palawan earlier Thursday at 1 a.m.

Fisherfolks and those with small seacraft are advised not to venture out over the seaboards of areas under Signal No. 1 and the northern and western seaboards of northern Luzon.

New cyclone

Meanwhile, PAGASA is monitoring a new tropical storm outside the Philippine area of responsibility with the international name "Man-yi."

As of 3 a.m. today, the eye of "Man-yi" was located at 2,460 km east of Mindanao. It is packing maximum sustained winds of 85 kph and gusts of 105 kph.

It is forecast to intensify into a typhoon as it hovers over the sea.

PAGASA said "Man-yi" is not expected to enter PAR while "Samuel" is inside the Philippine jurisdiction due to the interaction between the two tropical cyclones.

"Man-yi" will be assigned the name "Tomas" once it enters PAR on Sunday or Monday.
