MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 1 was hoisted in two northern Luzon provinces as a low pressure area develops into Tropical Depression “Isang.”

Isang is the ninth tropical depression to hit the country and the first weather disturbance for the month of August.

As of 10 a.m., the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Isang was located 735 kilometers east of Basco Batanes.

Isang packs maximum sustained winds of 55 km per hour near the center and has a gustiness of up to 65 kph.

Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 1 was raised in the Batanes Group of Islands and Babuyan Group of Islands. The state weather bureau said houses in the area could suffer light damage due to strong winds. Sea travel has also been disallowed because of the weather.

PAGASA said Isang is forecasted to move west north west at 19 kilometer per hours. It added that it might make a landfall in the country.

“Hindi natin inaalis ang posibilidad na ito'y mag-landfall at magkakaroon ng direktang epektosa may bahagi ng extreme northern Luzon,” PAGASA weather forecaster Obet Badrina said in the weather advisory.

Badrina also warned that rainfall may intensify on Monday over Mindoro, Bataan and some parts of Region 1.

Isang is also expected to intensify into tropical storm as it moves west northwest direction towards extreme northern Luzon on August 21 or 22.

It is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Tuesday or Wednesday.

The tropical depression enhances the southwest monsoon, which may trigger floods especially in low-lying areas starting on Sunday evening in western regions of Luzon and Visayas.

The public is warned of moderate to occasional heavy rains which may trigger flash floods and landslides over northern Luzon.

On the other hand, Metro Manila, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Bicol and Visayas may also experience cloudy skies with light to moderate with possible occasional heavy rains.
