How ‘trending’ stars Maine Mendoza and Kim Chiu remain on top of their game
MANILA, Philippines — Pandemic-proof indeed. “Phenomenal star” Maine Mendoza is approaching her seventh year in showbiz and her ability to trend is as strong as ever.
From the simplest activities to her shows’ new trailers, it is hard to miss what is happening in Maine’s life without her fans telling you. Though Maine sometimes seems hard to reach for some people, having the access to talk to her because of her project with Cignal TV just proves that she is one of the most “non-showbiz” celebrities that you will ever meet.
Her answers are also snappy and full of sense, may it be about investing, her next career move or what next activity she would want to do with the Season 2 of Maine Goals with her on and off-screen friends Chamyto and Chi Chirita.
“I’m very hands-on,” she said. “This is a continuation of things I want to cross out of my bucket list.”
During Season 1, Maine had many realizations through the activities she did during the show such as having a tomato farm, which could be very beneficial for her in the future.
But now, her goals for Maine Goals will also be doing activities that will include giving back and putting a highlight on the jobs here in our country.
“Iba rin natutunan namin from the farmers’ agriculture and through all the activities that we’ve done, sobrang dami namin natutunan, mas pinapahalagahan namin (ang) hard work ng manggagawang Pilipino.”
At this point in Maine’s career, having gone past the Aldub phase and the issues of the loveteam fans breathing down her neck because of her current love life, Maine said it is her most ideal and relaxed state in showbiz and it is how it should be.
“I feel super relaxed na ngayon,” shared she, “Wala na yung pressure sa’kin like before na I need to do this for the supporters, parang ngayon yung mga taong sumusuporta sa akin are here to support what I love doing and support the people I love also.”
Maine has a pretty full schedule because Maine Goals airs weeknights at 8 on Cignal TV Buko Channel 2. She promises her fans that once the situation is safer and her schedule is more vacant, she will take the time to make it up to her fans.
“Alam naman natin na medyo limited lang din talaga, restricted din yung pwedeng gawin ngayon and I’m grateful na they don’t pressure me in things,” said she.
Besides Maine, we also caught up with Kim Chiu, who just trended this week after K-pop idol Yuna of Itzy did a TikTok duet of Kim’s dance cover of Swipe.
We chatted with Kim in person at the H&M Tropical Essentials event at Manila Peninsula, where she was introduced as one of the ambassadors, alongside Catriona Gray and influencer Rei Germar.
Upon entering the intimate venue, her simple and bubbly demeanor would make you forget that she has millions of fans rallying for her. Of course, we asked her about the duet video and she could not stop gushing.
“I’m very happy as a K-pop fan, for the longest time idol ko talaga BlackPink, wow inisa-isa? Twice at Itzy! October ko pa iyon ginaya sa TikTok, tapos kahapon nga nag-dance duet kami, sa dami dami, akin pa yung na-duet. Grabe talaga!”
Kim said that she is open to all possibilities of collaboration when it comes to Korean entertainment. Given her stature in Philippine showbiz, Kim is humble enough to act as the fan girl and that makes her very relatable.
It is no stranger to Kim that her name is being talked about online. She admitted that the first time she knew that she was all of a sudden trending this week, her heart almost dropped, especially that she first blew up on the trending list because of her pandemic “bawal lumabas” comment.
“Last time na nag-trend ako, grabe yung naabot kong ano, so parang lagi akong kinakabahan pagka nasa trending topic ako, pero this time, masaya naman ako sa naging outcome,” ended Kim.
