Durano-Razon tops Coral Invitational

CEBU, Philippines - Ramon ‘Boboy’ Durano IV and Hospicio ‘Razy’ Razon saved the best for last shooting 17-under-par 89 points last Saturday to bag the lowest net honors in the 30th Coral Invitational at the Cebu Country Club.

The heavyweight tandem of Carl Almario and Enrico Solon bucked all pressure and emerged the team with the best gross score in the four-day event that saw its final day literally doused with cold water as heavy rain fell Saturday afternoon.

The tandem of Durano and Razon had an aggregate of 170 points in 36 holes as they opened the tournament with 81 points Thursday for their first round. Durano fired rounds of 38 and 44 in the Modified Stableford Scoring System while Razon shot 43 and 45.

Almario had rounds of 34 and 37 while Solon shot 33 and 30 for a two-day output of 134 points (67-67).

The Coral Invitational is the annual member-guest tournament of the club.

DIVISION A

Kim Kwang Seok and Andrew Cañete topped this premiere handicap class after edging the duo of Jay Yuvallos and John Schilling. Both teams had aggregates of 162 points.

Kim fired rounds of 41 and 42 while Cañete made 40 and 39.

Yuvallos scored 38 and 40 while Schilling had identical rounds of 42. They finished as first runner-up.

The second runner-up honors went to the tandem of Nonoy Tirol and Jun Mendoza with 160 points. Tirol shot rounds of 34 and 43 while Mendoza made 42 and 41.

DIVISION B

Halfway leaders Glenn Sebastian and Perry Pe bagged the title for this group with a two-day effort of 168 points. They opened with 86 and finished with 82 points on the rain-soaked final round.

Sebastian shot identical rounds of 42 while Pe had 44 and 40.

The first runner-up honors went to Rosalier ‘Boy’ Dagondon and Leslie Nathan with 165 points. Dagondon made 43 and 40 while Nathan had identical rounds of 41 points.

Eugene Tio and Henry Chu finished as second runner-up with 164. Tio shot 41 and 42 while Chu made 42 and 39.

DIVISION C

Another team that made it very big on its final round was that of Justin Uy and Wilbert Loa making 89 points for a two-day total of 160.

In their opening round, Uy shot 37 points while Loa had 34 for a total of 71. Things changed for the best in the second and last round as Uy scored 45 and Loa made 44 giving them the title for this category via runaway fashion.

First runner-up was the tandem of Collin Go and Philip Huang with 153 points. Go made 35 and 40 points while Huang had 38 and 40.

Second runner-up was the tandem of Jacinto ‘Jack’ Jamero and Jepthe Romea with a total of 152 points on rounds of 72 and 80 points. They edged the father and son tandem of Joe and Jingo Abellana and that of Vicente Sy and Ray Jacinto in the countback.

SENIORS’ DIVISION

Edward Go and Francisco ‘Ed’ Acosta bagged the title for this category exclusive to teams whose total age of the members is at least 120 years. The team fired rounds of 82 and 84 for a total of 166. 

Go made 38 on both days while Acosta shot 44 and 46.

First runner-up was the tandem of Bebot Baldemor and Choie Ramos with 165. Baldemor made 45 and 43 while Ramos had 34 and 43.

Arturo Go, Edward’s youngest brother, and Pablo Soon finished as second runner-up with a two-day total of 157. Go shot 42 and 41 while Soon of Wack-Wack and a regular visitor to Cebu, had 38 and 36.

OTHER WINNERS

Andre Borromeo led the cast of other winners as he eagled the par-4 hole number 6 Saturday to win a Skygo motorcycle.

The best score of the first day of the regular event went to the team of Andrew Parrott and Martin Bell with 83 while the best among the seniors was the team of Vince Colina and Bobby Barria with 81.

The best score for the second day in the regular event went to James Ong and Jose Santos with 85 while the best among the seniors were Max Tan and William Lim with 87.

The lowest net individual award went to Ed Acosta with 18-under-par 90 points while Eric Deen emerged as the lowest gross champion with even-par 72 points on rounds of 35 and 37. (FREEMAN)
