Philippines abstract Art Review 2013

A unique art exhibition gathering the works of 24 Filipino contemporary visual artists across three generations is currently ongoing in Qube Gallery at the Henry Hotel, brought together by the progressive thinking flairs, passions and inner dichotomies nestled within the modern artistic movement known as abstraction.

Entitled Philippine Abstract Art Review 2013, the show presents more than 30 works made by the country's masters of the abstraction genre, each exemplifying the ideals of creative originality and freedom, punctuated by the infinite possibilities inherent in the arena of creative exploration and expression.

Celebrating its opening last November 30, the show also reminds viewers of abstraction's ties with the modicums of progressive shifts and technological advances - two creative slants which have long been associated with abstraction since it gained popularity after World War II.

Curated by Dr. Reuben Ramas Cañete, the exhibit puts the spotlight on works crafted with the undertones and subtexts of abstract expressionism, folk cubism, semi-representational themes, thematic contrast and more, highlighting pieces made by Pandy Aviado, Max Balatbat, Benjie Bisaya, Benjie Cabangis, Gary Custodio, Ed Defensor, Andrew de Guzman, Jane Ebarle, Jes Evangelista, Harry Mark Gonzales, Allain Hablo, Fitz Herrera, Raul Isidro, Jeline Laporga, Josef Laureano, Red Mansueto, Sio Montera, Rheo Nepomuceno, Demi Padua, Eghai Roxas, Karl Roque, James Salarda, Aner Sebastian and Javy Villacin.

Presented by Qube Gallery with the support of The Henry Hotel, The Islands Group of Companies and the Gawad Kalinga Foundation, the show has also pledged its support for the Roof for Relief project, which intends to provide roofs for more than 5,000 families affected by typhoon Yolanda, making it more than an unprecedented Cebu-based gathering of the finest examples of Filipino-made abstract compositions.

In its staging, Philippine Abstract Art Review 2013 manages to focus on the distinctions that define recognizable imagery from abstract compositions, along with heralding the charismas and appeals that define the key differences between narrative compositions from non-narrative works, formal versus linear, representational versus symbolic.

In its entirety, the show effectively gives emphasis on the solid appeal found in switchbacks, twists and turns.

Philippine Abstract Art Review 2013 will be on exhibit until December 23, 2013 in Qube Gallery at The Henry Hotel, No 1 Paseo Saturina, Maria Luisa Road, Banilad. For more information, visit www.qubegallery.com or like Qube @ www.facebook.com/qubegallery
