MANILA, Philippines - The Los Baños science community held their own celebration of the National Science and Technology Week yesterday with a “Syensaya” exhibit where the inventions of scientists and researchers in the different educational institutions, and private and public science research and development (R&D) agencies were showcased.

Spearheaded by the Los Banos Science Community Foundation Inc. (LBSCFI), the “Syensaya” exhibit gathered the exciting products of science R&D by the various institutions in Los Baños such as the UP Los Baños, the International Rice Research Institute, the Laguna State Polytechnic College, and the different R&D institutions of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

The “Syensaya” exhibit, which carried the theme “S&T Toward a Smarter Science Community,” was held at the UPLB Copeland Gymnasium.

The DOST commended the LBSCFI for continuing to be the uniting force that has successfully coordinated and fostered a community spirit among the various science R&D units of the different public, private and non-governmental organizations in Los Baños.

The DOST established the Los Baños Science Community along with three other science communities in 1984 by virtue of Presidential Executive Order No. 784.

Of the four science communities established by EO 784, only the Los Baños Science Community has survived and continues to grow.

DOST Secretary Mario Montejo noted the solid membership of the LBSCFI.

“Although composed of diverse public and private institutions in the sciences, arts, business, and social services sectors, the foundation’s members complement each other’s strengths,” Montejo said in a message to the LBSCFI and “Syensaya” delivered by DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Carol Yorobe.
