SM Foundation holds urban garden training program
MANILA, Philippines — The success of Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan Farmers’ Training Program in the countryside encouraged SM Foundation to introduce the program this time to urban dwellers who wanted to learn the latest techniques in vegetable cultivation inspite of the limited space for planting.
Introduced in 2015, Urban Farming and Gardening Training aims to help promote food security as well as provide alternative livelihood for the participants in the urban areas.
Participants are taught smart farming using limited spaces or backyards and utilizing plastic containers as pots when possible.
For 12 weeks, the trainees diligently attend to their plants in a demo farm and upon completion of the training, they replicate what they learn in their own backyards.
The urban gardening training program has been conducted in the cities of Antipolo, Las Pinas, Mandaluyong, Muntinlupa,Taguig, Pasig and Quezon City among others.
Program partners are the Department of Agriculture, DSWD, Macondray, and the concerned local government units.
