DTI organizing several missions to drum up investor interest

Louella Desiderio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is organizing trips to several countries this year to drum up investor interest as well as promote other business opportunities in the country.

Trade Secretary Gregory Domingo told reporters he is set to visit Japan, Taiwan and Korea this year to encourage more firms to invest in the country.

Trips will also be made to the US and Europe to promote the country to firms in those countries.

By mid-year, a multi-country visit to South America will likewise be conducted, particularly in Peru, Chile, Mexico and Brazil.

“Chile and Peru have long been asking us to take a closer look at them,” Domingo said.

According to Domingo, Chile will be sending a delegation in the country first before his trip along with a business delegation.

Mexico is part of the list as it is seen as an important partner of the Philippines given the two countries’ cultural affinity.

As for Brazil, Domingo said it is worth checking out since it is among the world’s largest economies.

The overseas trips are being conducted to promote the Philippines as an investment destination as well as to strengthen trade relations with other countries.

Among the sectors being actively promoted for investments by the DTI is manufacturing.

This, as the sector is seen to generate jobs and contribute to the goal of making economic growth inclusive.

Apart from manufacturing, Trade Undersecretary Ponciano Manalo Jr. said earlier the DTI also wants to get investments in other sectors such as game development and animation, healthcare information management as well as tourism.
