Pacifica 67: One fairy made all the difference

The March 18, 1967 issue of the Philippines Free Press, writing about the fashion show Pacifica ’67, said ‘One fairy made all the difference.’

The fairy in reference was Miss Universe 1965 Apasra Hongsakula of Thailand, whose name meant fairy in Thai. She was the guest model who ‘impressed everyone with her beauty and sincerity, and on the night of Pacifica ’67, no one disputed that she stole the show from the rest. With nary a trace of temper, Apasra modeled graciously, smiling from start to finish, and when towards the end, Armi Kuusela Hilario, handed Miss Hongsakula a bouquet, the audience felt she deserved at least a dozen more.’

She gave her services for free as Pacifica ’67 was for a worthy cause, to raise funds for the Asian Eye Institute.

The fashion show, held at The Plaza, presented the creations of Pedrito Legaspi and Vicky Galang, with guest designers Madame Vera Cykman of the Star of Siam in Bangkok and her French couturier.

Other models were Chona Kasten, Joji Velarde, Cherry Pie Villonco, Elsa Payumo, Triccie Sison, Trina Yujuico, Tina Santos, Dinty Barredo and Apasra’s very own sister Paveena.

Pacifica was the word used by Teddy Hilado for the fashion culture group led by Dr. and Mrs. Herminio Velarde (nee Joji Felix) and Kasten in 1965. Pacifica ’67 was the third fashion show of the group. — RKC
