Why and how the Blues trumped the Reds?
President Donald Trump flunked in the mid-term, and really fell flat on his face. He is coming to the Philippines for the ASEAN summit as a lame duck world leader, same as his close ally Netanyahu of Israel. That November 3 American election is changing the ball game altogether, and really overhauling not only the American political landscape but the global dynamics of the next waves of geopolitics.
The Democrats promised a tidal wave. The American voters delivered a blue tsunami. President Donald Trump was not on the ballot but the U.S. voters were told to imagine that he was the one running. And indeed, the election results "trumped" the administration in a historic shift from Red to Blue. The Democrats are now going to control the House, the Senate, and majority of the governorships. This is a milestone and landmark feat that happens once in a lifetime in mid-term elections.
Why did it happen? Think of the three I's: Inflation, Iran, and Immigration. “It's the economy, stupid,” as President Bill Clinton would put it. American families are struggling with high prices. The MAGA Republicans promised to bring down prices but instead, the prices soared. The tariffication of imported raw materials and the unwanted war in Iran were the main drivers of soaring inflation and the runaway prices of food and other prime commodities. The working class was penalized.
Only the trillionaires and billionaires were making a killing at the manipulation of the markets and the misuse of taxation in order to favor the rich MAGA donors like Elon Musk. The working class was pushed from both the supply and the demand sides of the economy. The favored elites were poking their fingers into the supply chain while friendly next-door neighbors like Canada, Mexico, and the rest of South America were antagonized, thus disrupting the inflow and outflow of imports and exports at friendly terms.
Poll results clearly and emphatically indicate that the Democrats are taking control from east to west, from north to south. Hispanics, blacks, Asians, and Native Americans rallied behind the Democrats. The youth, the students, the farmers, the labor sector, the women and the LGBTQIA all came together to deliver a stunning message to the MAGA president. Texas, Georgia, Kansas, Ohio, Maine, North and South Carolina turned from red to blue.
Texas, which, for the longest time, was controlled by the Republicans during the times of the Bush father and son, have decided to elect a Democrat senator and governor too. James Talarico, a former middle school teacher defeated a multi-billionaire who was handpicked by Trump and heavily funded by Elon Musk. Talarico, who comes from a poor family and was raised solely by a mom who was abandoned by an abusive father, made history by becoming the first Democratic senator in 38 years.
Many historic firsts emerged favoring the Democrats. Georgia elected the first female black governor in the entire U.S. New Mexico elected the first indigenous American and Texas the first Latina governor. The first Muslim senator was elected in Michigan. Black governors were elected in Maryland, Florida, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Nevada. Muslims were elected. Michigan elected Abdul El Sayed as senator. Ilhan Omar won as a member of the House from Minnesota. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, and Aisha Wahab of New Jersey too.
Most of the Filipinos in the U.S. are overwhelmed with joy and are celebrating with the Democrats in welcoming a new era in American politics. This too shall definitely affect the Asia-Pacific Basin, hopefully towards a better future and more secured West Philippine Sea. We can only hope and pray.
