Elections: From secular to sacred heights

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero Ballescas - The Freeman

Conventional campaigns and elections have almost always been highly divisive. Remember how, in past campaigns and elections, supporters tried to bully and intimidate rival candidates and their supporters?

Many candidates had gold, guns, goons in previous Philippine campaigns and elections. Recently, they have had trolls.

Many of the political candidates and their supporters had, and still have their own agenda, never national unity or interests but pansarili, for self, for one’s own or family vested interests.

In the present political horizon, however, we are observing a growing alternative to the past, selfish goals and conventional, divisive campaign practice of politicians and supporters.

Leni Robredo took her time to pray and discern God’s will, not hers, for our nation. She prayed, waited, and spent time in discerning God’s will for her and for our people unlike others who were super-eager to announce their candidacies.

A prayerful person, she chose to declare her God-destined candidacy on the Feast of the Holy Rosary of Mama Mary who showed us how best to obey God’s will and mission.

Mama Mary knew the sword, the pains, the hurdles that would pierce her heart by agreeing to be the mother of Christ, the Savior of all humankind.

However, all Mama Mary wanted was to glorify and praise God. And so she agreed- let Thy will be done according to Thy will.

Without the gold, goons, guns and trolls available for wealthier, more powerful candidates, an undaunted Leni leapt in full faith, dedicating this campaign and election to God and His glory.

Like the dawn that heralds a new day, her declaration was welcomed and met with much hope and enthusiasm by volunteer supporters all throughout the country.

Her choice of PINK as her campaign color again deviated from previous choices of past politicians who often chose from the primary colors red, blue and yellow.

A Leni supporter all the way from the US shared that “the color PINK represents unconditional love, compassion, nurturing and love. Pink combines the need for action, the passion and power of the color red, helping it to achieve the potential for success and insight offered and softened by the purity, openness and completeness of the color white. Pink tones down the physical passion of red replacing it with a gentle loving energy.”

Springing from her love for God and His people, Leni’s supporters, in turn, demonstrated their love and support for Leni and for her mission for God and our nation.

They voluntarily showed their numbers and support through their own version of caravans all throughout the country. Those with cars took to the road. Not to be outdone, those with tricycles, trisikads, carabaos even formed their own pink delegation! Even divers took pink to the seas.

Artists, others volunteered, painted murals, donated tarpaulins, other campaign items. Youth and children as well posted their photos of their support for Leni.

Leni may not have the millions and the power of her rivals but she knows God is all she needs.

Leni’s additional precious blessing- her volunteer supporters who, like her also believe their mission is not for themselves/others, not just for Leni, but to proclaim, honor and glorify the Lord through this campaign for 2022 elections!

Leni and her Kakampinks have agreed to raise the campaign/election, from secular level to sacred heights!

And the Pink Revolution is now on full swing!

Beyond just campaigning for Leni, the KakamPink revolutionaries include prayers, kind and compassionate acts of sharing (especially to the needy among our people) whatever they can (lugaw, time, talent, treasure) wherever they are

Beyond secular to sacred heights, may the present campaign/2022 elections lead to national healing and unity, with God as the Victor!
