CEBU, Philippines — While natural disasters may have caught Cebu off guard last year, it won’t stop the ever-celebrating city from holding its annual Sinulog festivities, as various celebrities are set to visit the Queen City of the South this month.

 - Staples -

Sinulog isn’t complete without the usual homegrown events that have become staples of the weeklong celebrations.

The 17th season of the singing competition Sinulog Idol kicks off tonight, January 9, and will run until the Jan. 15 finals, 7 p.m. at the Fuente Osmeña Circle. Twelve singers will compete to be the next Sinulog Idol, succeeding last year’s winner, Zal Cabanas from Santander.

The songwriting contest Cebu Popular Music Festival continues with its 43rd edition on Jan. 16 at the gymnasium of the University of the Visayas-Main Campus, featuring 12 entries. Half will compete in the Young Songwriters category, while the other half will vie in the traditional Love Song category.

Candidates will also set their sights on succeeding last year’s Sinulog Festival Queen Sofi Maxim Grenmo of Lapu-Lapu City. A preliminary runway competition will be held on Jan. 14 at SM Seaside City, followed by the coronation night on Jan. 16 at the Cebu City Sports Center.

 - Kapamilya, Kapuso stars -

Another Sinulog tradition is the influx of celebrities visiting Cebu.
