Que fumbles at the finish; Ormsby cruises to victory

Dante Navarro - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Angelo Que missed salvaging a Top 10 finish with a final-hole mishap, ending up with a 70 for joint 18th in the Hong Kong Open won by Aussie Wade Ormsby in wire-to-wire fashion at the Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling yesterday.

Que came through with a pitch-in eagle on the par-4 No. 10 to break a one birdie-one bogey game at the front and stay in joint seventh but blew a two-under card with a double-bogey on the par-4 18th.

Que flaunted superb putting as he finished with 26 putts, which led to six scrambling pars, including three straight from No. 14. But after splitting the 18th fairway, he hit a couple of errant shots and reached the green in four.

He wound up with a 274 total worth $11,850 for joint 18th with young Korean Kim Joo Hyung (68), Thai Prom Meewasat (70) and India’s Shiv Kapur (71), 11 strokes behind Ormsby’s 263 output he spiked with a third straight 66 to rule the $1 million kickoff leg of this year’s Asian Tour by four strokes worth $180,000.

Reigning British Open champion Shane Lowly of Ireland and world No. 16 Tony Finau of the US actually pressed their bid early on but ran out of holes in an attempt to overhaul a big deficit. Lowly shot a 64 to grab solo second at 267 while Thai Gunn Charoenkul carded a 69 for third at 268.

Asian Tour Order of Merit titleholder Jazz Janewatanond of Thailand likewise fell short of his comeback bid, ending up with a 68 for fourth at 269.
