Shorthanded Ginebra inks Murrell
MANILA, Philippines – Barangay Ginebra has officially signed big man David Murrell off waivers, bringing a big boost for a depleted Gin Kings roster.
With injuries to Jamie Malonzo, Aljon Mariano and Jeremiah Gray, the 6-foot-4 Murrell is expected to fill in the void at the wing, with the claim being finalized on Thursday.
The former UP Maroon last played for the Magnolia Hotshots, seeing limited minutes before being relegated to an unrestricted free agent with rights to salary list after the squad traded for Jerrick Balanza.
After averaging 7.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game for the Converge FiberXers in the PBA Season 47 Philippine Cup, the former slam dunk champion was traded to Magnolia last year, in a deal that also brought big man Abu Tratter to the Hotshots.
With Murrell’s signing, the Gin Kings placed Jared Dillinger to the unrestricted free agent list.
Ginebra head coach Tim Cone, last week, underscored that with the injuries, they are looking for players to plug the holes of the squad.
And with Murrell in tow, the Gin Kings bolstered their lineup with a few games remaining in the elimination round of the All-Filipino conference.
Also on Thursday, Magnolia reactivated wing Rome dela Rosa.
Dela Rosa has been injured for quite some time, but he seems to have healed.
In lieu of the forward, the team placed guard Jio Jalalon to their injured/reserved list.
Ginebra is currently third in the standings with a 6-3 win-loss record, while the Hotshots are second with a 5-2 slate.
