MANILA, Philippines — Yeng Guiao has resigned from his post as head coach of Gilas Pilipinas following the Philippine basketball team's dismal outing in the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

With Gilas going winless in both the group stage and classification phase, Guiao on Wednesday stepped down as mentor of the national team after a year of tenure.

Gilas mainstay Gabe Norwood, however, didn't let Guiao leave without expressing his gratitude.

Shortly after Guiao's resignation, Norwood took to twitter to give a message for his former mentor.

"For answering the call in time of need and stepping up to the task of leading us into battle--thank you, Coach Yeng," Norwood's tweet read.

Guiao had led the Filipino cagers to their second World Cup appearance in a row.

But a lineup hampered by injuries and short preparation time, Gilas couldn't come up with a win in five games in China.
