MANILA, Philippines – The loaded UP Fighting Maroons faced an early acid test in a tough win against the FEU Tamaraws, 61-55, in their UAAP Season 82 opener at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday.

Javi Gomez de Liaño waxed hot for the Maroons and was key to the victory.

Former Green Archer Ricci Rivero also had a rousing debut for the Diliaman-based squad.

The Maroons held a double-digit advantage at halftime, 38-27.

But a huge scoring run from the Tamaraws in the third canto got them back in the game.

After three quarters of play, UP was only ahead by three, 47-44.

In the fourth canto, FEU was able to tie things up at 55. But the Maroons were able to hold on to deny FEU the comeback.

Jun Manzo converted on clutch free throws to ice the game.

Kobe Paras did not suit up for the Fighting Maroons due to injury.
