Lady Red Spikers deny Chiefs NCAA elims sweep

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — San Beda denied defending champion Arellano University a sweep and an outright finals berth with a heart-stopping 16-25, 25-17, 25-19, 18-25, 16-14 victory yesterday in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan City.

The Lady Red Spikers forged a three-way logjam on top alongside the Lady Chiefs and the St. Benilde Lady Blazers on identical 8-1 (win-loss) records.

But CSB ended up with the highest tiebreak score to claim the top seed while AU fell to No. 2 and San Beda No. 3.

CSB will thus clash with the winner of the duel between Perpetual Help (5-3) and Jose Rizal U (4-4) on Thursday while AU squares off with San Beda in the other Final Four duel slated on Jan. 22.

In the men’s class, AU downed San Beda, 25-17, 22-25, 25-16, 25-12, to end up at No. 3 with a 7-2 mark, behind reigning titlist Perpetual Help (8-0) and CSB (8-1).

Jesrael Liberato unloaded 18 hits while team captain Christian Joshua Segovia and Christian dela Paz chipped in 16 and 11 hits, respectively, as the Chiefs finished the No. 3 seed in the Final Four with a 7-2 (win-loss) record.

Emilio Aguinaldo College wound up at No. 4 with a 5-4 card.
