Balanced scoring tows Tamaraws past Archers
MANILA, Philippines — Far Eastern University opened their UAAP Season 81 campaign on a good note, turning back last year's finalists De La Salle University, 68-61, in Sunday's men's basketball skirmishes at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Arvin Tolentino, Kenneth Tuffin, and Achie Iñigo all tallied double-digit scoring performances to help the Tamaraws weather past a pesky retooled Green Archers squad.
The Green Archers banked on Leonard Santillan, who registered 19 big points. But his showing was put to naught by an almost-balanced production by FEU.
"Maganda na iba 'yung pakiramdam. We got our first win of the season," Tamaraws chief tactician Olsen Racela said in the post-game presser, seemingly still reeling from their unproductive outings against the Green Archers in the previous season where they lost twice in the elimination phase.
De La Salle's season-opening marks the lowest production in a game since they bowed down to University of Santo Tomas, 77-61 in September 2015.
Only Prince Orizu did not score for the Tamaraws.
The bench accounted for more than half of both team's total points. The Tamaraws' secondary unit had 36 to its starters' 32, while the Green Archers had it at 35-25.
This is the debut of Louie Gonzales who replaced Aldin Ayo in DLSU's head coaching post.
FEU faces UST next, they tangle this Wednesday at the Big Dome.
DLSU shoots for a rebounding win against Adamson University, Saturday also at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
