UST bags 42nd UAAP general championship
MANILA, Philippines – The UAAP puts the spotlight on the season's best and brightest as well as the great athletes from yesteryears as it brings down the curtains on Season 80 on Wednesday at the Far Eastern University auditorium.

Program starts at 4:30 p.m. with the awarding of the Athlete of the Year and tribute to past UAAP heroes and heroines serving as major highlights.

The AoY is picked from among the MVPs in the 28 events, with those who suited up for Team Philippines in international competitions getting the edge in the consideration for the highest honor. In the past, the league named more than one deserving student-athlete to the AoY plum.

National U's taekwondo star Arven Alcantara looms as one of the top candidates, having led the Bulldogs to their first ever taekwondo crown and capturing a silver in the Southeast Asian Games, along with FEU trackster Clinton Bautista, who won the UAAP's 110m hurdles in record fashion and grabbed a bronze in his pet event in the Southeast Asian Games.

Beach volleyball MVP Sisi Rondina of Santo Tomas, baseball ace Jerome Yenson of Adamson and swimming rookie-MVP Chloe Daos are also in the mix as they powered their respective schools to UAAP victory and fulfilled national team duties overseas.

Just like in the opening ceremonies and in keeping with the season's theme "Go for Great", there will be a tribute to greats in the closing program, where University of Santo Tomas likewise takes centerstage as the UAAP's general champion for the second straight year.

The Tigers and Tigresses assembled 281.5 points in the league's scoring system built around triumphs in women's beach volleyball, poomsae, women's tennis and women's athletics and a shared championship with Ateneo in men's judo, to win their 42nd general championship overall. The Thomasians beat La Salle (271) which struck gold through its women's teams in badminton, table tennis, chess, volleyball and football.

As final act as Season 80 host, FEU turns over the hosting chores to NU.
