15 teams vie in Marajaw caging
MANILA, Philippines — The Marajaw Basketball League gets going today with 15 teams, including those from host Surigao City and Siargao, clashing for top honors at the Surigao del Norte provincial gym.
Sports commissioner Ramon Fernandez will grace the opening ceremony of the tournament that features teams from the municipalities of San Francisco, Sison, Taganaan, Placer, Gigauit, Bacuag, Claver, Tubod, Mainit, Alegria, and those from Siargao, including the Tuna Republic, Marlins, Socorro (Bucas Grande) and the Wave Riders.
Surigao del Norte 1 District Rep. Francisco Jose Matugas II said the league serves as part of the province’s sports tourism and sports anti-drug programs.
Under the umbrella Marajaw sports program, Matugas said competitions in football, and the revival of traditional Filipino games for children of up to 12 years of age will also be held.
Surigao recently hosted two major international sporting events, including the Siargao International Surfing Competition and the Siargao Game Fishing meet.
