Lady Bulldogs, Spikers gear up for big rematch

The Lady Bulldogs rallied from four points down late in the decider to repulse the Lady Spikers, 26-24, 19-25, 22-25, 25-17, 16-14, in their first meeting last Feb. 18 as the former lorded it over the field in the first round elims with a 6-1 card. File

MANILA, Philippines — National U shoots for a repeat while La Salle seeks for a payback as Lady Bulldogs and Spikers face off in what promises to be another thriller of a duel of fancied teams in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan today.

The Lady Bulldogs rallied from four points down late in the decider to repulse the Lady Spikers, 26-24, 19-25, 22-25, 25-17, 16-14, in their first meeting last Feb. 18 as the former lorded it over the field in the first round elims with a 6-1 card.

But La Salle, with a 5-2 slate, has vowed to get back at NU, ensuring another fierce duel in their 4 p.m. encounter before an expected sellout crowd.

“We just have to be ready anytime. I think that has been our attitude,” said NU coach Babes Castillo.

MVP contender Jaja Santiago, who produced several huge plays late in the fifth set to complete their comeback against the Lady Spikers, is confident of their repeat bid but stressed the need for them to be ready for La Salle’s big fightback.

“We know La Salle will try to get back at us. But we’re ready,” said Santiago.

Adamson, meanwhile, tries to atone for its embarrassing loss to UE as it takes on UP at 2 p.m.

With last Sunday’s 22-25, 25-22, 25-19, 20-25, 13-15 defeat to the Lady Warriors, the Lady Falcons, who stunned the Lady Spikers prior to that setback, dropped to 3-4, now trailing the Lady Eagles (5-3) by one-and-a-half game in the chase for the last semis berth.
