UST mentor Sablan exits

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — After two years at the bottom capped by a near 0-14 campaign in UAAP Season 80, University of Santo Tomas is reportedly parting ways with coach Boy Sablan.

Sablan’s supposed exit was splashed all over the internet yesterday, with ABS-CBN Sports reporting that he and his coaching staff are vacating their posts by Nov. 30 – six months earlier than the end of their tenure.

Sablan, who had maintained it would take three years at least to build a contender, couldn’t be reached at presstime.

A former Glowing Goldie and part of the coaching staff that led UST to its last title in 2006, Sablan was under fire after failing to make inroads for the Tigers since taking over last year.

One of the most decorated teams in the league, the Tigers plummeted to their lowest point the past two seasons, finishing with 3-11 on Sablan’s maiden year and barely escaping a winless stint in the ongoing Season 80.

This was a complete turnaround from the finals appearances and runner-up finishes his immediate predecessors Pido Jarencio achieved in Seasons 75 and 76, and Season 78, respectively.
