San Beda sweeps Arellano, gain solo lead in NCAA lawn tennis

Associated Press

MANILA, Philippines – Defending champion San Beda on Wednesday waylaid Arellano U via a 3-0 sweep in a duel of unbeaten teams to seize the solo lead in the 92nd NCAA lawn tennis tournament at the Rizal Tennis Center.

Vince Carlo Ramiscal downed Wilmer Sabas, 6-3, 6-4, in the opening singles and then Eric Fernandez and Andre Rodriguez turned back Romel Fortadez and William Deyro, 6-2, 6-4, in the match-clinching doubles win.

Andre Tuason capped the emphatic win with a 6-0, 6-4 dumping of Sabas in the final singles match.

It was San Beda's sixth straight win, putting it two wins closer to sweeping the round and clinching the first round pennant.

The Red Netters face the Letran Knights and the San Sebastian Stags today and tomorrow.

Other results saw St. Benilde edging Perpetual Help, 2-1, Jose Rizal waylaying Lyceum of the Phl U, 3-0, and Letran besting San Sebastian, 2-1.

The top four of the first round will advance to the second round where they will play each other in another single-round format.

If the first round winner tops the second round it will clinch the title outright. If there's a different second round pennant winner, there will be a one-game championship.
