UST coach under probe for alleged maltreatment

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – University of Santo Tomas yesterday said Tigers coach Bong Dela Cruz is still with the team but he’s been barred from handling team practices as he’s currently facing an investigation for still undisclosed reasons.

“I cannot call it preventive suspension because we have not suspended him,” UST Institute of Physical Education and Athletics director Fr. Ermito de Sagon told the university’s official student publication The Varsitarian. “He cannot handle the practices until we have made a decision.”

The Tigers have been the talk of social media with online reports of Dela Cruz’s sacking and lately, allegations of violence and maltreatment of players.

De Sagon refused to say what Dela Cruz is being investigated for, only saying it is “about our basketball program in reference to the University’s policies.”

“When there is an investigation, the usual thing is that they will not (perform their duties),” said De Sagon.

He added that the players themselves pushed for the resumption of training, which a member of the UST juniors’ squad coaching staff is overseeing in the meantime. “The team cannot afford to miss training, otherwise, they will end out of shape,” said De Sagon.

Dela Cruz’s contract will expire in April and talks are rife that UST isn’t inclined to keep him in charge. Reportedly considered for the job are Blackwater assistant coach Boy Sablan and former Tigers Bal David, Estong Ballesteros, Jinino Manansala and Bennet Palad.
