Brothers in art

THE PEPPER MILL - Pepper Teehankee -

When the same passion for the art is shared by two brothers, expect a show that beguiles the senses.

Recently, Manila was treated to a display of Dutch art at its finest when brothers Alex and Han Van Hagen held their much-awaited exhibit dubbed Van Hagen & Van Hagen: Brothers in Art Part 3. Alex showcased his stunning photographs while Han displayed his exquisite copper etchings.

The event was held at The Gallery of The Peninsula Manila and presented by FILA.

For the third year in a row, the Van Hagen Brothers exhibit sold quite well. A mainstay in practically all of Manila’s social gatherings and weddings, Alex is a respected photographer who beautifully captures the faces and memories of each glamorous event. In this exhibit, Alex turned his lenses away from people to feature landscapes and still life that were captured from his travels all over Europe and the Philippines. Alex’s series of steps, for me, stood out from his photographs on exhibit.

Han showed everyone why he is one of Europe’s contemporary masters of copper etching. One of the founders of The Etch Club of The Hague, Han was educated at the prestigious Royal Academy for Arts and Design at The Hague. His lovely copper etchings included diverse subjects such as birds, cows, sheep, scenery and architecture. The biggest etching in this show was a painstakingly detailed etching of a cow, which was certainly my favorite piece from Han’s collection.

Van Hagen & Van Hagen: Brothers in Art Part 3 was also presented by Smart Infinity, Belo Medical Group, Bench, Citi, Nokia, KLM and Philippine Tatler in cooperation with Moroso, FurnItalia, Fruits & Passion, Charriol, Moët & Chandon and Power Mac Center. A portion of the proceeds from the exhibit went to the Real Life Foundation.

Watch out as there is a plan of bringing this exhibit to Cebu in a few months!
