Cebu KKK’s revolutionary song

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

In a country with a perverted sense of patriotism as we masochistically celebrate deaths and defeats instead of victories, it is time that we take a paradigm shift.

Among the many victories in Cebu are the Battle of Mat-an (April 27, 1521), Battle of Fort San Pedro (September 1, 1569) and the Cebu Flag-raising (April 10, 1898). In the flag raising predating Emilio Aguinaldo’s declaration of independence on June 12, 1898, our revolutionary forefathers led by Luis Flores, president of KKK Cebu, a revolutionary song was also sung. It must be noted that the flag-raising of Aguinaldo was instrumental, unaccompanied with lyrics. It was composed by Julian Felipe; it was only on the following year that the Marcha Filipina Magdalo renamed as Marcha Nacional Filipinas had a lyric the following year in a poem written by Jose Palma.

Here is the lyrics contained in the book written by Dionisio Sy (A Short History of Cebu and the Anti-Spanish Revolution in Cebu (originally written in 1979, reprinted in 2008):

“Alerta revolucionarios

Los bolos prepararse

Gritando viva republica

Viva nuestras lealtades

(segunda parte)

Viva la suerte de los Filipinos

Viva los Indios combatimos

Contra los Frayles Agustinos

Y a los Espanoles son malvados

(Coro)

Viva los Cebuanos

Viva los Katipuneros

Valor revolucionaries

Los bolos en las manos

Aqui  estan los cazadores

Todos son cohardes

Los finos Espanoles”

Cebu’s flag-raising was the true declaration of independence. In attendance were the Cebuano KKK leaders, three civilians and soldiers, the Philippine flag sewn by Cebuanas after the design of Emilio Aguinaldo and lastly it had a song. The rest of the nation must know this event, as Imperial Manila historians and officials perpetually undermine the role of the Visayans in the country’s wars.

Cebu is the venue of victories which must be nationally observed to deliver the message to our citizens that we are victors and not losers, we are brilliant warriors’ not dumb fighters.
