That time of the year

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

As Holy Week approaches, I celebrate the anniversary of my being a writer in Cebu's oldest newspaper. My first entry was on the importance of the Lenten season and why we should celebrate it. It was a pretty rewarding feat, not discounting the fact that I was still 18-years-old then, probably the youngest columnist by far.

I was lucky to have been given the chance by my editor, who believed in me every step of the way. Others on the other hand did not enjoy that same rare opportunity. At some point, everything happens for a reason.

The generation today comes easy. They complain at what they do not have and want everything in an instant. It is the era where toddlers demand at top speed or else you are set to hear wails all day long; a time where tablets, pads and phones have become essential.                "Check-in," "like," and "follow" have now different connotations. Because of how the world works, there is a certain fear of missing out especially when social media becomes distant.

This year, I guess it is about time to slow down on demanding too much in life — especially when things don't go well as planned. Some of the church leaders are calling on to the people to sacrifice in this time of Lent. The word is heavy, yet Jesus Christ carried his own cross and allowed himself to be a subject of mockery. To sacrifice is to lay loose, let go and let him take control even if it requires a great amount of pain. It may not the greatest feeling in the world, but the outcome is priceless.

The coming days will be filled with religious events that is not compelled for everyone to attend. That being said, workers and students alike will get how many days off from the usual routine. It would be so tempting to go out, have a vacation. But then again, as I have said in the previous years (and I reiterate it again like a broken record), the season is called Holy Week for a reason. It is a time to put those gadgets away or at least minimize its use so our minds could be at ease. This could be the perfect time to reflect on life and spiritual health. Perhaps the only time of the year where you can just keep a clear mind and a light soul, forget the worries and pain of yesterday.

Start slow, let out a deep breath and re-think the past year. Can you still live with how you are now? Those extra baggage in hand will be useful if you leave them behind, then you start anew. Whatever you may be bringing, remember that Christ paid for all in the cross some two thousand years ago. Let us never forget the reason for the season.     Reflect on his mercy, compassion and heart as he was still with us on earth. Maybe that would be a good jump off point for your holy week.

As for me, I will be in a beautiful island of paradise which is often associated with witchcraft. It will be my first time there, no doubt but this is a trip given to me for a task. But while I will be there my mind will wander lose on the reflections of life that have brought me to where I am. Maybe touch on who I should thank for, like the big Guy up there.
