More rhetoric from the North

THAT DOES IT - Korina Sanchez - The Freeman

BLURB: It seems useless for the UN to talk sense into North Korea, since it is always at odds with them in the first place!

More threats have come out from North Korea, the latest one saying that the military has permission to fire their nuclear missiles at American targets, namely bases in Guam and on the US mainland itself. While people see this as more rhetoric from the North, nations are already condemning Pyongyang’s pronouncements of war, saying that the situation may spiral out of control. China, the North’s sole ally, is calling for calm and sobriety from all parties concerned. I think Beijing should talk to their young, rotund friend in Pyongyang, and tell him to just shut up. In this day and age, nobody wants a war the scale of what happened in 1950! Not with the available weapons today!

And I’m really worried that because of all the North’s riling of its troops, one fanatic may actually start world war! That one North Korean soldier may actually “hear the voice of his god”, and fire a weapon. I’m certain the South will retaliate. Someone should really knock some sense into this country, which continues to avoid joining the international community in peace and cooperation!

But isn’t the whole point of winning a battle is to have the element of surprise? Not only is Pyongyang telegraphing its punches, its providing its enemies with information! I’m not an expert in warfare, but isn’t that just foolish? It only gives credence that all this is just noise the North is making to cover its inadequacies. Like a puffer fish making itself appear bigger than it is, or a dog barking itself crazy until another dog actually challenges it! I almost wish someone would call their bluff, so the whole world can see their reaction!

But North Korea’s military might is not something to sneer at. They may be far from having nuclear weapons, but their conventional weapons are formidable, even for the US. This isn’t like the exchanges of rockets and artillery fire between Hamas and Israel. Bigger rockets and bigger guns will come into play! And that’s something very, very real, rhetoric notwithstanding!

It seems useless for the UN to talk sense into North Korea, since it is always at odds with them in the first place! If diplomacy is the only course of action to avert conflict, then good luck! While I may dismiss the threats as empty, the region is just full of weapons to also ignore. Again, someone should talk sense into this country.
