Probe sought on students’ assault on Davao teacher

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) has been asked to investigate a viral video showing a male teacher being beaten up by students in Maco, Davao de Oro.

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) said the incident showed the lack of adequate protection and authority for teachers to enforce discipline in schools.

The video showed two people arguing before one of them attacked the other.

The incident reportedly occurred inside the gymnasium of the Elizalde National High School.

Police said the teacher had reprimanded a male student for violating a school policy prohibiting them from wearing earrings.

The student reportedly became furious and tried to punch the teacher, but he was stopped by his fellow students.

However, another student, who is a brother of the student, reportedly hit the teacher from behind.

Together, the siblings reportedly punched the teacher before other students could stop them.

The teacher suffered injuries and filed a complaint before the police.

The students were placed under the custody of the local social welfare office.

“While we recognize the importance of the Child Protection Policy, the lack of balance within it often leaves our teachers defenseless and with their hands tied when it comes to disciplining students,” ACT said in a statement yesterday.

“The students involved should be provided proper guidance and support, not just punishment,” it added.

The group reiterated its call for the immediate enactment of the Teacher Protection Bill.

“This proposed measure aims to empower teachers to effectively fulfill their role as surrogate parents capable of enforcing discipline while ensuring they have proper guidance and legal protection,” ACT said.

The DepEd has yet to issue a statement on the matter.
