MANILA, Philippines — Three people drowned in floodwaters spawned by the southwest monsoon and a low-pressure area (LPA) in Balingasag, Misamis Oriental in the past few days.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the bad weather affected thousands of people in various areas of the country. 

The fatalities – aged 42, 52 and 65 – were swept away by the current as they were trying to cross a spillway in Barangay Camuayan, the NDRRMC said.

The bad weather displaced up to 5,210 families composed of 18,296 people in Central Luzon, Central Visayas, Zamboanga peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao, Soccsksargen and Bangsamoro region.

Of the figure, 270 families or 1,016 people are staying in evacuation centers in affected regions.

The NDRRMC said more than P2.1 million worth of assistance has been provided to communities and people affected by floods.
