LTFRB: No double fare for plus-size commuters

MANILA, Philippines — Drivers should not discriminate and charge plus-sized passengers double for taking up a bigger space in public utility vehicles, according to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

“Regardless of a passenger’s size, the fare covers one person. This practice of overcharging is not only unlawful, but discriminatory and unjust,” LTFRB Chairman Teofilo Guadiz III has said.

The LTFRB has received complaints that overweight passengers are being charged fares exceeding the standard rate.

“Such practice is a clear violation of LTFRB regulations and human rights,” Guadiz said.

He said drivers found to be committing the offense may face fines and suspension or revocation of their franchises, in accordance with LTFRB guidelines.
